Authentication Code & UTR Number
Find and manage your company’s tax and Companies House codes.
This article explains where to find your company's Authentication Code and Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), and how to access them through your account.
Authentication Code
Your company authentication code is a 6-character code issued by Companies House. It allows you to securely file and update company information online.
If you formed your company with 1st Formations:
- In your "Order Fulfilment" email: This email was sent on the day your company was incorporated and includes all company documents and information about the services included in your package
- To locate your code, simply look for the attachment titled “Authentication Code”
- On your 1st Formations Dashboard: Simply log into your account and select the "My Companies" tile. You will find your authentication code listed next to your company name and number.
If you formed your company with Companies House
-
Companies House sends the Authentication Code via post directly to the registered office address of the company. This is received around 5 days after the company is formed.

UTR Number
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HM Revenue and Customs. It identifies your company for tax purposes.
When will I receive my UTR?
- Your UTR is usually issued within 2–3 weeks after your company is formed
- HMRC automatically sends it by post to your registered office address
How to access your UTR
- If you are using our Registered Office service, this will be scanned and emailed to you upon it's arrival
- It will also be stored on your Dashboard under the "My Mail" tile and can be viewed by selecting the PDF icon
- If you are using a personal Registered Office address, the letter will be received by post at this address
