Customer wants advice on the number of shares they should incorporate their company with
BACKGROUND Shareholders are the legal beneficial owners of a limited company. These individuals (or companies) invest money in a business in return for a portion ownership in the form of equity shares. In return, they are usually entitled to vote on the management and overall direction of the business and receive a portion of the profits, relative to their percentage of ownership. INSTRUCTIONS We should never tell a customer the number of shares they should have within their company structure. This is the decision of the customer only. We can discuss how the division of shares would impact the structure in regards of ownership. If there is only one shareholder within the structure this would not make a huge difference as regardless of the number this shareholder will be the sole owner of their company. If there are multiple shareholders within the structure, we can advise the customer that they may want to use a number which is easily divisible. This could be 10, 100, 1000 for example. We can advise the customer that they cannot have any decimal points within the share structure.
