How to Find Your Company’s UTR (Tax Reference Number)

What Is a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)?

A Unique Taxpayer Reference - or UTR - is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC. It is used to identify your company for tax purposes. You need it to manage your company’s tax information and to contact HMRC.

Where to Find Your Company’s UTR

HMRC normally sends the UTR to your company’s registered office address soon after incorporation.

If you use 1st Formations’ address service, we will:

  • Scan and email the letter to you
  • Upload the document to your online portal

To access your UTR in your portal:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Choose My Mail from the dashboard
  3. Click the PDF icon to open and view the document

You can also find your UTR in these places:

  • On official letters from HMRC
  • In your HMRC online account - after you have registered
  • By requesting a copy of a lost UTR here

Why Is the UTR Important?

You will need your UTR for the following tasks:

  • Filing Self Assessment tax returns
  • Claiming a tax rebate
  • Registering for VAT or PAYE
  • Making company tax payments to HMRC

Your UTR helps HMRC match your tax records to your business correctly.
